Coral Tree
These coral tree flowers are all over Santa Barbara and Goleta at the moment.

Double centurion
I looked back through my pictures from last weekend and this one seemed half-decent. No doubt this guy's legs felt as shaky as this photo after cycling 200 miles.

Variable checkerspot
As well as lots of wildflowers there were lots of butterflies out and about, like this one, the variable checkerspot
Euphydryas chalcedona
.

Aliso Canyon
I am really pleased with this shot of a leaf in a stream. I took loads (I love digital!) but this one shows best all of the elements that I was after.

Drum Canyon Road
I walked along Drum Canyon Road today. There was a big bike race going on, and although I took lots of pictures of them none of them came out very well. This will have to do.

Kelso Dunes
A case of dune imitating sky or sky imitating dune?

Lava beds and Cinder cones
The lava beds had some really amazing plants growing on them - like this cactus. The hills in the distance are old cinder cones apparently. It was a brilliant place!

Yellow and Black
This lichen really stood out as I was walking on a lava bed in Mojave National Preserve. I also thought it made quite a nice abstract shape.

Cactus up close
After Death Valley I drive south to the Mojave National Preserve. These cacti had some really long spines and were very photogenic.

Blue flower
There were so many different species of flowers in bloom - this was one of my favorites.

Death Valley flowers
I had great fun this weekend playing with my new macro lens in Death Valley and Mojave National Preserve. It seems as though the whole of the normally dry interior of California is covered in an unending carpet of wildflowers. It was pretty amazing to see.

Kelp
My new macro lens arrived today! I couldn't wait to try it out. Hopefully I will really be able to put it through its paces this weekend in Death Valley...

Fishing
I was confronted by an old man this afternoon, while out taking photos on Goleta Beach pier. I am not sure what he said to me but he feigned taking my picture with what looked like a TV remote control. Very puzzling behaviour.

Not much to say about this - I need to get out with my camera again!

Roadside flowers
These flowers survived the lawnmower that was trimming the grass in the Upper Oso campgound.

Little Pine trail
A long walk today along the Little Pine Loop trail. There was a thick layer of cloud all day and only mist at the top. Still I did get a few nice shots.

Reading on the steps
This woman's pose was so interesting I thought I'd try to take a candid shot. It's a nerve-wracking experience but I am quite pleased with the result.

Seaweed and beach tar
I quite like the colours in this shot from yesterday's beach walk.

Longboarder
There has been a pretty decent swell here these last couple of days. This longboarder was setting off to join the populated line-up at Campus Point.

Belly Dancer
From last Saturday. State street was treated to the eastern delights of a belly dancer (just outside Fatburger).

Nineteen Oaks campground
This was the view at the end of my walk on Sunday. I think I shall walk this same path next weekend see if I can get up to the peaks in the distance. It was a great day.

Cowboy
I was eating lunch by the side of a stream near the Upper Oso campground when this guy rides past. I had to pinch myself and check my camera that I had actually just seen a real cowboy!

State street cruisers
These guys in their pimped ride were just lapping up the attention when I pulled out my camera. You just had to smile.

I was really lacking inspiration today - it's almost as if my own eyes are useless.

Shore and bird
Down at Goleta Beach again and this long exposure shot, luckily the bird stayed fairly still for the whole 15 seconds. 18mm f22 ISO 200.
